Our Three MiFi Review
As we’ve always eager to try out the Three Network’s innovative services, we had our heart set on reviewing the new Three MiFi Mobile Broadband Service. The Three Network is one of the largest and longest running 3G networks in the UK offering different 3G services such as the Mobile Broadband from Three. We previously reviewed the Mobile Broadband from Three, but how does the Three MiFi differ and how does it fare in different areas in the UK?
Setup
Our assessment of the Three MiFi Mobile Broadband Service is based on our direct experience. We started off from scratch in order to give users a clear view of the whole setup process. The MiFi device is a Wi-Fi mobile broadband mode. Unlike a laptop dongle, the MiFi device acts as a signal cloud that multiple users (up to 5 devices) can take advantage simultaneously. This of course is quite handy for multiple users working in the same room, people in a meeting, or simply a laptop user surfing the internet and downloading music their iPod.
Setting up the MiFi is as easy as turning it on. All you have to do is turn on the power switch, wait for a minute or two, and you’re set to go. Any Wi-Fi enabled device in the coverage area will be able to use your MiFi, so it’s wise to set a password to avoid your neighbours leeching on your connection.
In terms of size, the MiFi device is much bigger than the Mobile Broadband dongle, but it won’t affect its portability factor. Not to mention, it does not clutter your laptop as it free stands anywhere you need to be. The device’s design is quite futuristic with 4 distinct lights on its black and white front panel. The MiFi device runs on battery life, but can be transformed into an ordinary dongle for recharging using the Micro USB cable provided.
For the setup process, we first had to choose between paying monthly or paying as we go. At the time of writing, users get a free MiFi device under the 18-month contract. For users opting to sign up for the Pay as You Go, the MiFi device is up for purchase at affordable prices. If you’re planning to stick around with the MiFi, signing up for a monthly contract is much more economical on the long-run.
When you turn on the MiFi device, the icon lights on the front panel show battery power, signal strength, and connection type. The lights on our MiFi device were flickering for a couple of seconds before finally obtaining a signal. On the downside, the MiFi device’s user guide isn’t very extensive, so some users will feel a bit confused when the lights flicker and will wonder whether the device is actually working.
Speed & Download
The MiFi from Three offers various speeds in different plans. Picking a certain speed does not guarantee you will get the same output as it depends on your location in the coverage plan. We found the speed to be consistently reliable in different areas. While it is consistent, it is not as fast as the Mobile Broadband service.
The MiFi device’s wireless range is impressive, with the signal reaching devices up to 30 m away. We tested it out in different rooms and found the signal to be consistent between walls and doors.
Download restrictions depend on your purchased plan. You can choose variuos download allowances, ranging currently from 1 GB up to 15 GB. We found the download speed to be good and suitable for most users with average download needs.
Final Verdict
The Three MiFi Broadband device provides reliable service for users with no heavy download needs. While we weren’t very impressed with the speed, the MiFi device is a great alternative for landline connections. It does a great job of connecting several devices hassle-free. The monthly plans bring great value for the fees listed.
