Our Acer 751 Review
Design and Screen
From the moment we laid eyes on the Acer 751, we fell in love with its ultra slim build and glossy black lid. In fact, the design was so reminiscent of HP’s Pavilion series with its general look and feel. Available in energetic red, serene blue, snow white, and glossy black, the Acer 751 is compact and durable – unlike many of the netbooks currently surfacing in the market.
The screen is large by netbook standards as it exceeds the common 10 inches. This of course comes with a great advantage, as the resolution is much higher suitable for movie viewing and easier web browsing. You won’t have to scroll down pages as much with such a resolution. The screen is bright with colors and backlit with LED lights.
Keypad and Trackpad
The Acer 751’s large screen gives the netbook a larger frame. Consequently, we found the grey keyboard area to be quite generous both in speed and performance. Typing is done with ease and the button feedback is great sensitive to the lightest touch. The Acer 751’s multi-touch trackpad makes the web browsing experience almost iPhone-like with the ability to “pinch” your page to zoom in or zoom out. On the down side, the roomy keyboard area can be a dust magnet at times. We can’t imagine using the Acer 751 in a construction site or outdoors without cleaning it up every day or so.
Performance and Battery Life
The Acer 751’s performance is sub-standard compared to its predecessors and competitors. While most netbooks in the market use an older, faster Intel Atom processor, Acer chose to employ a newer, much slower processor. The choice isn’t the wisest when put next to other netbooks that play videos impeccably while the Acer 751 struggles to keep up.
The Acer 751 runs on Windows XP – like all netbooks in the market – at 1 GB RAM. This of course, does help speed up the Acer 751’s performance and enhance its functionality. In terms of storage capacity, we felt at ease with the 160 GB capacity as it is more than enough for a netbook user. A typical user will use only up to half of the given capacity to store music, download applications, and save documents.
In terms of connectivity, we were glad to find that the Acer 751 comes equipped with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, multi-format reader and 3 USB ports. The latter is most impressive, as you could really use the 3 USB ports for multimedia and data transfer. Some models come equipped with built-in 3G support, which makes it a winner in today’s 3G-dominated market.
The Acer 751 does not disappoint in terms of battery life. We left our Acer 751 running for a couple of hours in the background without draining the battery. For an average user, the battery life is excellent for light web browsing and some music playing in the background.
What We Liked
We liked the Acer 751’s sexy slim build, large screen, roomy keyboard, and great connectivity.
What We Disliked
We disliked the Acer 751’s slow processor and expensive price tag.
Our Final Verdict
The Acer 751 is indeed a small, curious thing. We simply adored its slim figure that’s easy to carry around the office. We loved working with its airy keyboard and large screen. We weren’t so keen on running simultaneous applications using the Acer 751, as the processer lagged and struggled at times. It does not disappoint for the average user, but it won’t suffice for any multimedia buff. Overall, it’s a great netbook once you overlook the unusual price tag on it.
