Our 3 Skypephone S2x Review
Design
The 3 Skypephone S2x adopts a practical look and feel. From the moment we first met the 3 Skypephone S2x, we felt a strong sense of nostalgia for the old days. The design is almost identical to that of Sony Ericsson’s models in the late 90’s. The 3 Skypephone S2x’s plastic and silver frame is durable and able to withstand falls on the ground – as proved by us accidently knocking it down to the ground. We thought the design could use some refined touches here and there but it works out nicely for men and outdoor adventurers.
Screen
The3 Skypephone S2x’s 2.2-inch screen is bright and rich with colours. Sporting a QVGA resolution, the screen is a performer under the sun and direct light sources. We didn’t have any problems with reflections; making this handset ideal for those on the move.
User Interface
Like the 3 Skypephone S2, the 3 Skypephone S2x has a simple, organized user interface. It is designed with the basic user in mind. We accessed almost everything we needed in less than 3 clicks. The Skype integration is smart and functional. We liked navigating through the 3 Skypephone S2x’s menus as the processor is rapid enabling smooth transitions.
Keypad
The 3 Skypephone S2x’s keypad arrangement is identical to that of its predecessor. There is a slight modification to the D-pad and functional keys. The 'call' and 'end' buttons are now coloured for less experienced users. We found the keypad to be responsive and easy to type with. While we missed the traditional QWERTY keyboard, we managed to type a quick text message without any hassle.
Camera and Multimedia
The 3 Skypephone S2x’s camera has been downgraded from 3.2 MP to 2 MP. This fall is disappointing, as we’ve expected more pixel density. Like its predecessor, the 3 Skypephone S2x lacks flash and autofocus. This of course is a nightmare for anyone capturing an image at night. The image quality is still agreeable but definitely not for anyone looking to capture high resolution images. We were looking for a front camera, but were surprised by the lack of a video-conferencing camera given that the handset is Skype phone. The extended memory gave us more storage space to store images and videos.
We were quite pleased with the music player’s file support. We were able to play our collection without any problems. Video playback is not as versatile; however, we were quite content with its performance.
Connectivity and Battery Life
The 3 Skypephone S2x is built to be the ultimate connectivity package. The Skype integration means that you can make free calls and send instant messages. The sound wasn’t choppy or average, but rather high-quality on the 3G connection. In addition to making Skype calls, you can easily access different websites through the built-in browser such as Facebook and Last.fm.
We loved testing the battery life of the 3 Skypephone S2x. It took us some time to drain it with several long Skype calls, internet surfing, and music syncing. This, again, makes this handset a winner for anyone commuting or simply out on an adventure away from power outlets.
What We Liked
We liked the 3 Skypephone S2x’s practical design, Skype integration, and 3G connectivity.
What We Disliked
We disliked the 3 Skypephone S2x’s camera performance and modest screen size.
Our Final Verdict
The 3 Skypephone S2x is a handset ideal for adventurers and campers. It offers great performance at affordable rates. We loved the Skype integration as we were able to call friends and family abroad free of charge. While the camera isn’t what we looking for, users will find the 3 Skypephone S2x is simple to use and sports awesome battery life.
