Our Nokia 6220 Review
Design
The Nokia 6220’s design reminded us of early Nokia handsets back in 2000. At just 90g, it is featherweight and easy to carry around. The general plastic feel of the handset does not go with its price tag. The exception of course is the glossy plastic keypad which gives the design its leather-like unique look.
Screen
We can always rely on Nokia to impress us with screen performance, and the 6220 delivered and exceeded our expectations. The picture quality stands out with great colour saturation and contrast. It works great in both direct sunlight and in poorly lit areas. At 2.2” 16 million colour QVGA resolution, the Nokia 6220’s screen disappointed us as a bigger screen would’ve worked better with the features it offers.
User Interface
The 6220’s user interface is a great step from many handset user interfaces with intriguing visual enhancements. The Active Standby screen displaying all important notes, messages, calls, and notifications makes your life easier. You can easily place a shortcut for different websites you frequent for easier access and quicker web browsing.
Keypad
The Nokia 6220’s keypad isn’t a looker but not a performer either. The plastic keypad is prone to accumulate fingerprints and dirt over time. We didn’t feel at ease typing, but we are probably biased towards the standard QWERTY keyboard. Overall, the function buttons and D-pad aren’t big enough, so they don’t provide the user with the comfort he needs. The alphanumeric keys are slightly bigger, but they don’t outperform any keypads out there. The volume rocker and other top buttons are hard to press at all times. Overall, the Nokia 6220’s keypad choices aren’t what we expected.
Camera & Multimedia
Moving on from the sub-standard keypad, we meet our favorite part of this review: the Carl Zeiss 5.0 megapixel camera. The camera is capable of delivering great quality in all lighting conditions. It sports an autofocus system, photo balance options, and after-effects. The image quality is sharp and rich with color.
Video capturing is as good as its photo shooting. It captures videos at 640x480 VGA with 30 f/s. A handy TV-Out cable is available to show your family and friends your videos.
Moving on to the music player, you’ll be met with the standard user-friendly interface with categorized music. We found syncing with PCs to be quite easy – unlike many handsets available in the market. Music quality is pleasant, warm, and refreshing. We would’ve loved a standard 3.5 mm audio jack rather than the 2.5 mm provided.
Connectivity and Battery Life
The Nokia 6220’s connectivity lacks WI-FI – something that made us raise an eyebrow. It does come with 3G HSDPA , GPS, A-GPS, Infrared, and Bluetooth. The web browser supports XHTML making web browsing a great activity.
In the battery life department, the Nokia 6220’s charging time depends on how much you use multimedia, A-GPS, and the web browser. Upon trying out this feature-packed handset, we found that you can have up to 2.5 hours talk-time and 280 hours on 3G. It wasn’t as impressive as it sounds when compared with other 3G handsets. However, you can get up to 12 hours of music playback. Overall, an average user will need to recharge his handset every two days or so.
What We liked
Its 5.0 Megapixel Carl Zeiss Xenon flash camera, 3G HSDPA support, and great multimedia playback
What we disliked
Lack of Wi-Fi connectivity, small screen, slow user interface, and lack of non-standard 3.5 mm sound jack.
Our Final Verdict
Overall, the Nokia 6220 is a great handset packed with features and great connectivity. If you’re looking for a sophisticated design, the Nokia 6220 is not your handset, however, if you’re looking for features and performance, the 6220 is a great match.
