Our Nokia E5 Review

There was a time when business phones, like the Blackberry range, were for business people, while social networkers and leisure oriented users had their own handsets. Then, funseekers started to embrace phones like Nokia's E series, while leisure phones started to come with many features useful for business. Now the distinction is blurred, as demonstrated by the Nokia E5 mobile phone.

This E5 has a dual personality, offering a choice of two homescreens - one for business and the other for pleasure, or whatever you want. There is a wealth of options here for both screens, more than you would probably ever need, but once you have spent a bit of time customizing them, operation is simple.

With its tiny QWERTY keyboard and small landscape screen, it can seem like a bit of a compromise, or a phone made by a committee, but there are many features to offset these niggles. Above the keyboard, for example, are a group of well placed and useful shortcut keys, but only a volume rocker switch elsewhere to leave an uncluttered casing which feels good in the hand while being comfortable to use.

The address offers perhaps too much choice for contacts, with, for example, the choice of multiple mobile and landline numbers and email addresses for each contact. Would you ever need three mobile numbers for anyone? Probably not, but at least Nokia haven't been mean in this respect. The Nokia E5 mobile phone also gives you the option to import your Facebook contacts the first time you log in using its dedicated Facebook app. Messaging is comprehensive, too, supporting Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live Messenger and Google Talk.

Access to the web has been simplified here with the useful Wifi finder, which automatically searches for a signal, and you can connect in seconds. However, the size of the screen doesn't make for a pleasant browsing experience, and you would probably only use this phone for browsing through necessity rather than pleasure. Nokia have done their best to overcome the size of the screen with zoom, scroll and other navigation options, but again, you get the feeling of a compromise being reached. The YouTube viewer works just fine, but the tiny picture could force you to buy a little magnifying viewer from a philatelist's suppliers.

The generous 5-megapixel camera comes with a range of shooting options, including a flexible self-timer. Results were not superb, but nobody expects top-notch results from a mobile phone's camera. While useful, neither the camera nor video are a substitute for the real thing. Battery life was good enough to withstand a weekend of full use without the need for charging, while the combination of GPS and Ovi Maps syncs together perfectly.

What We Liked

The dual screens are a great idea, and easy to customize, too

What We Disliked

There's no getting away from it - the screen is just too small

Our Final Verdict

This kind of crossover between business and pleasure is becoming the latest trend and the Nokia E5 mobile phone looks like leading the way
