Nokia E72

3 DirectWhile the craze now is for touchscreen, this handset is so cleverly designed that you won’t hunger for it.
Our Nokia E72 Review
Nokia’s E72, the successor to its best-ever selling QWERTY phone, the E71, is similar to its predecessor both in its look and design and its operating system.
But a lot has changed underneath. This handset is quite large, at 114mm x 58mm, but slim at only 10mm. It weighs just 128 grams. While the 2.36 inch screen is large compared to other models, the resolution is a slightly disappointing 320 x 240 pixels, around half that of the latest Blackberry. However, its host of features more than make up for this slight failing. The E72’s strength is in its small but perfectly formed keypad, allowing easy e-mailing and texting. The intuitive keys also feature an @ key for ease of use. On the whole, the keypad is well laid-out and the designers have obviously worked hard to make it simple to learn and navigate.
The E72 also features an optical trackpad within the navigation D-pad, so light finger movement controls what you see on the screen. While the craze now is for touchscreen, this handset is so cleverly designed that you won’t hunger for it. The optical trackpad is invaluable for web navigation and scrolling through web pages.
This smartphone is clearly aimed at business users, but there’s still a lot of fun to be had – there are plenty of apps to download from Nokia’s Ovi store, although this doesn’t have the choice that Apple offers. There’s a 5 megapixel camera whose flash doubles as a torch. The digital compass with AGPS supports Ovi Maps for free voice navigation.
Email support is available from IMAP, POP, and Activesync, with Lotus Notes Traveler, and Nokia Messaging included. Although there is only 250mb of user memory, this can be upgraded up to 16gb with a microSDHC card. The E72 also supports Nokia messaging, where up to ten email accounts can be managed easily.
It was pleasing, too, to find that having multiple applications open at the same time didn’t seem to affect the phone’s functionality or speed. As you would expect from Nokia, both the design and build are excellent. If its predecessor’s success is anything to go by, the E72 should sell very well.
What We Liked
This is an extremely unflashy device – no whistles and bells, just the superb, unfussy functionality of all Nokia phones. It’s sure to be popular with people who see a phone primarily as a business tool and not a games console. The customizable home screen is a big plus, too, once you’ve set it up to your requirements.
What We Disliked
Navigation around the menu can be overlong, sometimestaking more than just a few clicks to find what you are looking for.
Our Final Verdict
The E72 at first seems to be just an updated E71, but it is so much more than that, and seems destined to outstrip the sales of the previous model.
