Our Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition Review
Design
The design of Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition is among our favourite designs of the year. It is definite eye-candy in the Samsung handsets line. The fiery red and grey combination brings out energy and refined elegance at the same time. The design appeals both to the older and younger generation with its slider action and colours.
Screen
At 2.8 inches, the AMOLED touch screen gives you all you need for awesome performance. It brings pulsating colours with a superb contrast without draining battery power. The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition does not go cheap with its screen. The capacitive screen enables better sensitivity to the finger touch thus providing better performance. Never in our reviewing experience did we see colours this contrasted – we could’ve have possibly mixed navy with black as it was pitch black. The screen quality is a bit off under direct sunlight but performs better than any handset in its range.
User Interface
The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition’s user interface is simpler than ever. Given that the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition is not a smartphone, it is quite impressive how much they’ve invested in usability and user-friendliness. The user interface complements the capacitive touch screen’s performance adding a hint of speed and swift navigation.
Keypad
The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition’s keypad is there for a reason: improved controls for non-experienced users. We saw the wisdom in such choice, as many users are just not adapting with the haphazard clicking of touch screens. Nothing beats the click of a button for a call or pushing alphanumeric buttons while typing in a message. Here’s the downside, making mistakes while typing isn’t easy with the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition, as you’ll have to go on-screen for the backspace control. The D-pad is quite extraordinary with its design, but not as friendly with its responsiveness.
Camera and Multimedia
It’s skinny and it’s armed with an 8 Megapixel camera. That was our first thought before inspecting the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition’s 8 megapixel LED flash camera. The camera’s features include: SmileShutter, Face Detection technology, panorama, and burst shoot mode. You can easily tweak the ISO, exposure, and colour levels. Add to that, the handy built-in Share Pix application enables you to upload your photos to your favourite photo sharing websites.
Video recording offers a 720x280 resolution shooting at the standard 30 frames per second. The video capturing is among the best out there as you can use the LED flash for added lighting. Video playback supports file formats such as: DivX, xVID, H263, H264, MPEG4, and WMV9.
The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition is a multimedia fiend. The built-in music player delivers the sound you need to sit back and relax or get down on the floor doing the six-step. We were a bit disappointed in the lack of a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack. You can easily change the settings depending on the music type. Here’s one trick we haven’t seen for a while, the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition enables you to record from FM radio. Just how neat can it get?
Throw in the GPS support for Google Maps and geo-tagging and you have the ultimate multimedia experience.
Connectivity and Battery Life
The Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition isn’t what we expected in the connectivity department. With the lack of Wi-Fi connectivity we’re left with: 3G HSDPA, Bluetooth, and Micro USB 2.0. We would’ve loved for Wi-Fi connectivity to be included, as this handset is for people on the move.
Power saving is the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition’s forte. The screen does not drain power, leading to longer video and music playback. In terms of battery life, the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition is average even with the power saving tricks.
What We Liked
We liked the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition for its lively screen, crystal-clear sound quality, powerful camera, and unique design.
What We Disliked
We disliked the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition for its lack of on-screen QWERTY, 3.5 mm sound jack, and storage space.
Our Final Verdict
We loved playing with the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition. Samsung never disappoints with multimedia although it could’ve been better with improved connectivity and battery life. Overall, if you’re looking for great design packed with hot technology, the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition is your handset of choice.

Sean Vanellis submitted on 4 May 2009before buying the ultra edition, I wasn't sure how is it different from the toco silver, but it is features-wise and more elegant
